SMARTER Goal: A Step Closer To Your GoalPage: 1 | 2 The first step towards getting what you want is deciding what you want. Once you’ve decided, you must write down your goal on a piece of paper. It’s not enough to have it in your head. I don’t know why, but writing down a goal does have the effect of taking you a step closer to it. SMARTER goal takes you a step further because it makes it crystal clear to you what exactly you want, and most importantly why you want it. What is SMARTER goal? S stands for specific. Your goal must be as specific as possible. So write a goal that is very specific. It’s not enough to just say, “I want to be successful”. Success means different things to different people. What do you mean by success? A promotion and a corner office a year from now? A pay raise? If it’s a pay raise, how much do you want? Would you like a 50% increase? Be specific. An important thing to remember is that while you need to be very specific, you need not know how you’re going to achieve it. Decide on the “what” and the “how” will be shown to you by a power greater than you.
M stands for motivational. Your goal must motivate you. It must inspire you. It makes you wake up in the morning eager to start your day because you’re working towards achieving your goal and making your dream a reality. You’re goal must be motivating, otherwise, you’ll abandon it at the first obstacle. The bigger your goal, the bigger the obstacle you will face. If your goal is not motivating enough, you will abandon it at the first obstacle. Which is bigger? Your goal or your obstacle? Napoleon Hill, the author of “Think and Grow Rich” said, I only see my goals. All obstacles must give way. A stands for actionable. The goal has to be actionable, which means there are actionable activities that you can do. There is something that you can execute. If you cannot take action, if you cannot act on it, nothing can happen. You have to be able to specify the actions you need to take for your goal to materialize. R is result-oriented. If there are no results, you cannot measure your progress. You wouldn’t know how close or how far you are to the goal. The only way to measure the goal is there has to be some form of results. What gets measured gets done. If you can’t measure it, you cannot get it done. For example, if your goal is to write a book, your means of measuring it might be that you’re going to spend 15 minutes on it each day and write at least one page per day. T is for time frame. There has to be a time bound. For example, you want to finish writing the book by 30 June, 2010. Or, you want to get the promotion within the next 12 month.
